The Kalamazoo Area Chamber of Commerce today announced the launch of Local First Kalamazoo, a new initiative designed to encourage residents and organizations to prioritize shopping, dining, and doing business with locally owned companies across the greater Kalamazoo region.
The initiative comes as many small businesses continue navigating rising operating costs, workforce challenges, and increasing competition from national retailers and online marketplaces. Through coordinated promotions, educational resources, and community events, the Chamber hopes to strengthen the local economy while helping members grow their customer base.
“Local businesses are the backbone of Kalamazoo’s economy,” said [Chamber President/CEO Name], President and CEO of the Kalamazoo Area Chamber of Commerce. “When our community chooses to support local companies, those dollars stay here—creating jobs, funding community programs, and helping Kalamazoo continue to thrive.”

The Local First Kalamazoo campaign will provide several opportunities for Chamber members to gain additional exposure and attract new customers, including:
A seasonal “Shop Local Kalamazoo” marketing campaign across social media and local media outlets
A digital Local Business Directory highlighting Chamber member businesses
Community events and pop-up markets designed to drive foot traffic to local shops
Promotional opportunities such as limited-time deals, featured business spotlights, and collaborative campaigns
Educational workshops to help businesses strengthen marketing, digital presence, and customer engagement
Participating Chamber members will also receive marketing toolkits—including social graphics, window decals, and digital badges—so customers can easily identify businesses that are part of the initiative.
Studies consistently show that locally owned businesses generate significantly more economic impact for their communities compared to national chains. According to research from economic development organizations, every dollar spent at a local business recirculates multiple times within the local economy, supporting jobs, infrastructure, and community services.
The Chamber believes that even small changes in consumer behavior—such as choosing a local restaurant for lunch or purchasing gifts from a local retailer—can create meaningful economic impact across the region.
Chamber member businesses interested in joining the initiative can register through the Chamber’s website. Residents can support the campaign by:
Shopping at locally owned stores
Dining at local restaurants
Attending Chamber-hosted community events
Sharing participating businesses on social media
